Charlton Athletic Football Club
Thomas Sandgaard is the Owner and CEO of the Charlton Athletic Football Club. Charlton Athletic is an English professional football club founded in 1905 and based in Charlton, south-east London.

Charlton turned professional in 1920 and first entered the Football League in 1921. Since then the club has had four separate periods in the highest flight of English football: 1936–1957, 1986–1990, 1998–1999, and 2000–2007. After World War II, Charlton reached two consecutive FA Cup finals, losing in 1946, and winning in 1947.

Regarding Thomas’s lifelong passion for English football, ”I have always had two passions – rock music and football.  I was a bit of a nerd when I was 13 so decided to go out and buy a guitar because I loved music and wanted to be one of the cool kids – and become a rock musician. I ultimately ended up playing in dozens of rock bands in the seventies and early eighties.  My love of football started when I played at an amateur level in Denmark and then really fell in love with the English game when I watched the FA Cup finals on Danish television in the 1970s.  In the last few years, I’ve reached a point financially where I can really do something like this.  Four months ago, a friend asked, ‘Have you thought about owning an English football club?’ And I thought, wow, that could be one of the most positive things that I could ever be a part of.”

Music
Thomas Sandgaard wasn’t the only 15-year-old kid with a guitar and a dream of becoming a rock star. Growing up in small-town Denmark in the 70s, he worshipped at the altar of gods such as Jeff Beck, Jan Akkerman of Focus and iconic Deep Purple six-string wizard Ritchie Blackmore.

Now, more than four decades after he drifted away from music, Thomas has returned to his first love. He is the guitarist and driving force behind Sandgaard, the band that bears his name and whose music embodies both the spirit and the sound he loved as a young man.
